(Sioux Falls, SD) — Two South Dakota State Penitentiary inmates are awaiting sentencing after they were convicted on multiple charges for assaulting two correctional officers. A South Dakota Attorney General’s Office release says a jury found 49-year-old Lester M. Monroe and 31-year-old Kyle Jones guilty of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault of a Department of Corrections employee. According to the release, Monroe and Jones could both face a maximum sentence of 100 years because they were prisoners when they committed the crimes in August of 2023. The week-long trial ended Friday in Minnehaha Circuit Court.
