Plans for a water park in Sturgis have been scrapped. During Monday night’s City Council meeting, officials acknowledged the city can’t afford the project, which ballooned from an estimated $4.5 million to over $10 million.
A scaled-down $5 million proposal was considered but lacked key amenities like adequate parking.
Now, the city is looking at an offer from the South Dakota Department of Transportation to purchase part of the 70-acre site. The DOT plans to use the land for upcoming I-90 projects, while the city would retain 20 acres.
The proposal will go before the City Council in the coming weeks.
