White Balloons Seen Are South Dakota Company’s Research Tool, Not Spy Balloons

(Sioux Falls, SD) — Folks might have seen white balloons flying over South Dakota lately, and they’re not Chinese spy balloons. These stratospheric balloons are made by Sioux Falls-based Aerostar. They aid in disaster relief and research for NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense. Aerostar launches between 100 to 200 balloons a year. About 25-percent of them come from the Sioux Falls facility.
