OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton scored two runs in the seventh inning to hold off the North Dakota State baseball team, 8-7, on Wednesday night at Charles Schwab Field.
The two teams combined to use 19 different pitchers with Julien Hachem (0-1) picking up the loss for NDSU (7-17, 4-2 Summit) after appearing for 1.0 innings. Seth Thompson also made his first career start on the mound notching one strikeout over 1.0 frames.
The Bison posted eight hits as a team with Colten Becker going 3-of-5 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Will Busch also added in two doubles with one RBI.
Creighton (22-4), who entered the week receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, opened up a 2-0 lead in the second before NDSU scored three runs on two hits in the fourth to grab the lead, 3-2, after Cadyn Schwabe scored on a walk with the bases loaded. The Bluejays then erupted for four runs in the bottom half to regain the edge, 6-3, after Teddy Deters delivered a two RBI single into center field.
Following two scoreless frames, the Bison pushed across three runs in the seventh capped off by a two-run double off the bat of Carson Hake to lock the contest, 6-6. The Bluejays once again answered in the bottom half with two runs to make the score 8-6 following an RBI single from Nolan Sailors. Becker responded for the Bison in the eighth with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, but NDSU couldn’t get anything going the rest of way and dropped the contest, 8-7.
NDSU will be back in action hosting South Dakota State on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
