Fighting Hawks Even A&M-Corpus Christi in Season Opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – North Dakota true freshman Charlie Basinet registered her first career goal in the 75th minute of Thursday night’s season-opening action against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sophomore Avery Toms delivered the helper, the first of her career, on the game-tying goal and the action highlighted a dominant second-half effort from the Fighting Hawks as the late offense earned UND a 1-1 tie against the Islanders in a hard-fought battle inside Dugan Soccer Stadium.

Basinet, the collegiate rookie from San Diego, California, delivered one of a dozen shot attempts in the second half, of which seven were on goal, for the Fighting Hawks. UND finished +11 in shots taken over the final 45 minutes of play as they forced the Islanders into just one shot attempt in the second half after AMCC took ten, six on goal, prior to the intermission.

An AMCC corner kick in the fifth minute of action came up empty, but the immediate opportunity that followed opened scoring as Islander true freshman Cilia Leal found the back of the net on the second chance effort to give the host a 1-0 lead. From there, Basinet’s classmate and fellow San Diego native Grace Miller recorded six saves as she faced 11 total shots with ten coming in the first half.

The Fighting Hawks nearly managed to even the score in the 30th minute as senior Julia Briggs set up junior Amelia Loeffler with a header attempt that was just slightly misaligned. Briggs, along with Mary GasawayAlisha Maake, and Miller, did not leave the pitch playing all 90 minutes for UND on a muggy, high-80s night in south Texas.

UND is back in action on Sunday against Oakland. It will be the first meeting all-time between the two programs and just the third time the Fighting Hawks have battled a team from the state of Michigan. Start time is set for noon from Rochester’s Oakland Soccer Field. The contest will not be streamed, however fans can follow live stats at www.FightingHawks.Statbroadcast.com.
