FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team scored seven runs over the first two innings to help pick up a 9-3 win over Northern Colorado on Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison (19-26-1, 14-10-1 Summit) scored three runs in the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead after Sam Canton sent an RBI double into left center. Will Busch, who was playing in his 150th career game, kept the momentum going into the second with a solo home run to stretch the lead to 4-0. Colten Becker added an RBI single before Canton closed out the second frame with a two RBI single to make the score 7-0.
Following a scoreless third inning, Luis Garcia extended the lead to 9-0 with a two-run single into right field in the fourth inning. Northern Colorado (12-36-1, 11-16-1 Summit) attempted to make a late surge plating three runs on three hits in the eighth to trim the deficit to 9-3 following a sacrifice fly. NDSU went on to close out the final frame to secure the 9-3 win.
NDSU posted 15 hits as a team with four different players logging multiple hits. Canton paced the Bison going 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI and one run, while Jake Schaffner went 4-of-5 with two runs.
Logan Knight (5-3) picked up the win tossing five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Alex Karns also provided 3.0 innings of relief with one strikeout.
NDSU will continue its series with Northern Colorado tomorrow. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
