NDSU Baseball Drops Home Opener Against South Dakota State, 5-1

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision in the home opener against South Dakota State on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.

The two teams will wrap the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Newman Outdoor Field due to expected weather on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., with game two to follow.

NDSU (7-18, 4-3 Summit) combined for 10 strikeouts in the series opener after Leland Wilson (1-3) tossed a season-high four strikeouts over 5.0 frames. Austin Bergum finished out the final 2.0 innings with a season-best three strikeouts.

The Bison notched three hits as a team with James Dunlap, Colten Becker and Davis Hamilton each contributing one.

South Dakota State (12-15, 5-4 Summit) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third following a two RBI double off the bat of Dawson Parry. The Jackrabbits then used a sacrifice fly from Parry and an RBI double from Adam Benes in the seventh to stretch their lead to 4-0.

Parry added insurance for SDSU in the ninth with an RBI double down the left line to make the score 5-0. NDSU attempted to rally after Will Busch scored on a wild pitch, but the Bison went on to leave two runners stranded and dropped the contest, 5-1.
