Twins Rally Past Padres In Seventh; Mahle Needs Tommy John Surgery

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Twins scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 at Target Field. Max Kepler tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice before Carlos Correa gave Minnesota the lead with a two-run double. Kyle Farmer added a long-ball in the victory. Emilio Pagan improved to 3-and-0 with the win, and Jorge Lopez picked up his third save.

The Twins took two of three from San Diego in the series, and they remain in first place in the AL Central at 21-and-17. Sonny Gray starts for Minnesota against the Chicago Cubs at home tonight.

In other Twins news, Twins pitcher Tyler Mahle will miss the rest of the 2023 season. Manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters yesterday that Mahle’s recent elbow injury will require Tommy John surgery. The Twins originally shut Mahle down for a month in late April due to a setback with his ulnar collateral ligament, but he was moved to the 60-day injured list earlier this week. Mahle will have the surgery within the next two weeks and it will sideline him through the start of the 2024 season.

In other injury news, infielder Royce Lewis began a rehab assignment at Double-A Wichita yesterday.
