SDSU Students Working To Develop Biodegradable Grocery Bags

(Brookings, SD) — A group of South Dakota State students are working on a plan that could change the future of grocery bags. The team just got back from Kenya after participating in the second round of an international contest for the Hult Prize. They call their business plan Agri-Cycle Innovations and have developed a product called “bAGgy” that may be a real solution to the pollution problem created by plastic grocery bags. It’s a plastic film made out of soybean hulls and sustainable chemicals that only takes about two months to decompose rather than hundreds of years. The team was picked as one of 360 teams out of 10-thousand from around the world to advance for a shot at a million dollars. Even though the plan came up just short of the grand prize, these students say they have put together something special and will continue their work.
