Native Liaison Hired By Sioux Falls-Based Suicide Prevention Org

(Sioux Falls, SD) — A suicide prevention organization based in Sioux Falls is working to help Native American youth with a new Native liaison. Lost and Found just created the position in response to the growing need of support for the underserved group. Dawn Marie Johnson, a Sioux Falls School Board member and descendant of Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, says she is the first to hold that role. Johnson plans to work with the Lost and Found programs already in place and tailor them to the specific needs of tribal communities. A 2023 South Dakota Department of Health report found that Native Americans are two-point-seven times more likely to commit suicide than White people.
