(Sioux Falls, SD) — Sanford USD Medical Center is now officially a Level 1 Trauma Center. It’s the only facility in the state verified to that level. The designation, awarded by the American College of Surgeons, is a recognition that the center “provides the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients.” Paul Hanson, President and CEO of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, says, “This is more than just a verification; this is Sanford setting itself apart by being the premier rural health care system in the country.” There are roughly 300 different criteria that need to be met, and the assessments are done on a three-year cycle.
